P53: A novel tumor suppressor​

Introduction

With about 86,000 PubMed listed articles, p53 has already become a popular topic for the study of cancer biology. From the time when high levels of mutated P53 were detected in the tumor cell by Professor Sir David Lane back in the 1970s, to the recent research unraveling the cancer progression by mutated p53 in the research by Nakayama published in Nature this year, scientists are continuously exploring the significant role p53 plays in cancer, and seeking for ways to eliminate cancer cells using various ways related to p53. The effects of p53 on cell cycle, immune system, and the maintenance of genome is soon be revealed. But as more knowledge has been discovered, more and more questions come as well. This review will briefly summarize the discovery of p53, introduce the activation and the response of p53 caused by cellular stresses, the significance of p53 on cell cycle control, apoptosis, and immune system, the mutation of p53 in cancer, and a short glance to possibilities of using CRISPR to reactivate p53 in tumor cells.
